Black & Decker TROS1000D Space Maker Under Counter Toaster Oven Review

under cabinet toaster oven

The Black & Decker TROS1000D Space Maker Under Counter Toaster Oven is the newest model in the Space Maker lineup of Black & Decker. There used to be a few more undermount toaster oven models such as the Black & Decker Space Maker Optima T1000, but they were all discontinued and pulled out the market in the 2000s.

There wasn’t any official explanation for the move, and some speculated the cause to be a potential of fire hazard. In year 2008, Black & Decker relaunched the Space Maker under cabinet toaster oven series with the TROS1000D model, and it has been the go-to choice for under counter toaster ovens since then.

Truth to be told, it is the only under cabinet toaster oven in the market right now, but luckily it gets the job done rather splendidly. Owners of the Black & Decker TROS1000D reported reliable performance and minimal heat transfer to the cabinet due to the included heat shield mount.

Features

As a mid-range toaster oven, the Black & Decker packs quite a few features for the price it commands. It is one of the cheaper 4-slice toaster ovens out there, and it is also a space-saver for those looking for an undermount toaster oven that can manage more than just toasting.

Measuring at 17″ x 13.5″ x 9″, it is on the smaller side and will fit at the bottom of most kitchen cabinets without any problem. Thanks to the spacious interior, it can fit a 9″ pizza just fine, despite the seemingly shallow depth measurement. This helps to prevent an excessive protrusion at the front, which may affect the aesthetics of your kitchen arrangement.

prosProprietary Mounting Template

The Black & Decker TROS1000D comes with a proprietary top-mounting template to make under-the-cabinet installation easy. 2 sets of screws at different lengths are included to cater for different thickness of cabinet base.

prosDigital Control

This model is equipped with digital control panel for simple operation of pre-programmed functions. Coupled with a LCD panel , the digital panel provides a more precise control over traditional knobs.

prosPreset Functions

3 pre-programmed functions include Bake, Toast and Keep Warm. The Toast function can be further refined into 7 different shades of toasts, while temperature settings range from 200oF to 450oF.

pros30 Minutes Timer

The preset timer of Black & Decker TROS1000D is on the shorter end of 30 minutes. Other models feature longer timer settings, ranging between 30 minutes to 90 minutes. If you want to a longer baking time, you may have to reset the timer after the first half an hour.

Advantages

Given the seemingly limited functions, there are still a lot to like about Black & Decker TROS1000D. It provides the versatility that no other toaster ovens can afford.

If you somehow change your mind about mounting your toaster oven to under the cabinet – and wish to place it on the counter instead, you can easily dismount it and use it as a countertop toaster oven. There are 4 legs that elevate the bottom high enough for efficient heat dispersal.

prosRemovable Crumb Tray

The crumb tray located at the bottom can be pulled down for cleaning. Take note that there is a piece of tape holding it in place (located at middle front of the bottom side). You need to remove the tape and gently slide the bottom panel towards the back to dislodge it. When you are done cleaning the tray, simply push the tray upwards and slide it towards the front to secure it in place.

prosSave-a-Plug Outlet

Another proprietary technology by Black & Decker, the Save-a-Plug is a special power outlet design lets you connect other SpaceMaker appliances without taking up another wall outlet.

prosLong Warranty Period

As with other Black & Decker Toaster Ovens, the TROS1000D comes with 2 years warranty, which is 1 year longer than most of its competitors.

prosCompatible with 3rd Party Accessories

This model is compatible with other 3rd party pan and rack sets, such as the popular OvenStuff Non-Stick 6-Piece Toaster Oven Baking Pan Set that is frequently bought together with the toaster oven.

What Could Be Better?

Despite its nifty advantages, there are some missing features that may disappoint potential buyers. For one, the undermount toaster oven does not come with interior light. Granted, there are not many models equipped with an interior light to monitor cooking progress, but this could have been a helpful addition.

If you like to check on the progress once in a while, we recommend that you place a small flashlight in the kitchen for occasional monitoring.

Other than that, the baking rack does not auto-eject when you open the front door. Unlike the more premium models such as Breville BOV800XL Smart Convection Toaster Oven that uses magnetic, auto-eject baking rack, you have to pull out the baking tray of TROS1000D.

Remember to get a pair of good baking gloves to prevent injury. If auto-eject function is important to you, the only affordable model that provides the feature is Cuisinart TOB-40N, but at the same time you’ll lose the flexibility of mounting it under a cabinet.

Some users may prefer the unique roll-up door featured in Hamilton Beach 31126, which facilitates the transfer of food in-and-out of the oven. Being an undermount toaster oven means the TROS1000D can’t make use of this feature.

Some users pointed out that the installation process of the unit under the cabinet can be challenging. To make it simpler, please refer to the instruction below for a step-by-step installation guide.

Black & Decker TROS1000D Under Cabinet Toaster Oven Installation Guide

You can follow the included Black & Decker installation manual up to a certain point, but after you place a washer over each of the 4 holes as directed, the instructions can be a little confusing. You are advised to follow these alternate instructions to install the under cabinet toaster oven.

Step 1:

Drop a screw into each washer from the bottom of your cabinet. There should be enough length of the screw protruding from the bottom of your cabinet to allow for proper threading into the nut. There are different lengths of screws provided, so choose the suitable ones according to the thickness of your cabinet base.

Step 2:

Now that you have the 4 screws hanging from the base of your cabinet, you don’t want to attach the hood (the mounting template) to the screws as instructed in Black & Decker’s instruction manual. Instead, attach the hood to the oven on an even surface, either on your counter top or on the floor.

Step 3:

The small space in between the hood and the toaster oven must be maintained to prevent the hood from disengaging in the rear. You can insert a piece of cloth between the hood and the toaster oven to create a snug fit. Leave a corner of the cloth outside for easy removal after the installation is completed.

Step 4:

At this point, you have your toaster oven attached to the hood, with a piece of cloth in between to maintain the gap. If you are strong enough, you can lift the entire unit and screw it onto the bottom of the cabinet. However, you are still advised to be cautious and do it with a partner. One person to hold the unit while another turn the 4 hanging screws with a Philips screwdriver.

Step 5:

When the unit has been firmly attached under the cabinet, remove the cloth. Don’t leave anything in between to prevent fire hazard.

Step 6:

If you wish, you can remove the 4 little feet for better aesthetics. Again, they are easily removable with a Philips screwdriver.

Why use an alternate set of instruction?

This set of instruction is used to replace the instructions contained in the official manual, where you are instructed to install the hood to the bottom of the cabinet first, before attaching the toaster oven onto the hood.

Most users find it hard to follow the original guide, and it can be more dangerous if the toaster oven is not screwed properly onto the hood, thus resulting in a loose attachment.

By installing the hood to the toaster oven first, you can be sure that the undermount toaster oven is securely attached to the hood, which is screwed in place with the screws extending from the base of your cabinet.

The Bottom Line

Finding the right kitchen appliances can be a real time and money saver in the long run. With more and more appliances to be purchased, the counter top space becomes increasingly limited and precious. While there are a lot of counter top toaster ovens to choose from, they ultimately eat up too much space that can be otherwise used for alternate purposes.

Currently, the only model that fulfills the market demand for an under cabinet toaster oven is the Black & Decker TROS1000D Space Maker Under Counter Toaster Oven. While the choice is limited, this model excels at what it’s designed to do, just as well as other more expensive choices that are strictly constrained to the counter top.
