Proctor Silex 4 Slice Toaster Oven Review

Proctor Silex 4 Slice Toaster Oven Review

Proctor Silex may not be a brand that immediately comes to your mind when we talk about toaster ovens, but they have a pretty good contender for the budget toaster oven category.

Granted, the Proctor Silex 31116Y 4 Slice Toaster Oven is not a perfect toaster oven by any means, but it’s an extremely affordable choice for people who want a simple appliance that works just fine.

To be honest, this toaster oven is lacking in many ways – there’s no sleek digital panels, no interior lights, and no preset cooking programs. But hey, for the price of a few Starbucks lattes, we have nothing much to complain for the overall quality that we get.

Features of Proctor Silex 4 Slice Toaster Oven

Measuring 14.8″(H) x 18.8″(W) x 9.3″(H), the Proctor Silex toaster oven is a pretty compact appliance. You should have no problem sparing some space on your countertop for it, and its weight of just 8.2 pounds makes it portable for people who are always on the move.

The exterior is made of metal, and it comes in either black or white color. In comparison, the Hamilton Beach 31143 4-Slice Toaster Oven which costs a little bit more sports a brushed metal surface that looks better in our opinion.

pros Spacious Interior for Personal Use

This model is designed for individuals or couples who don’t have to cook large portions of food. For this purpose, the interior of Proctor Silex 4 Slice Toaster Oven is plenty spacious as it can fit up to 2 personal pizzas or 4 slices of breads at any one time.

pros Comes with 1 Broil Rack and 1 Bake Pan

The toaster oven comes with a broil rack that can be used in 2 ways – up or “u-shaped” for baking, and down or “n-shaped” with a bake pan below for broiling purposes. Read the official guide for detailed instructions.

pros Crumb Tray (Non-Removable)

The crumb tray is located at the bottom, and it is designed to capture bread crumbs for easy cleaning. It comes standard with every toaster oven, and this model is no exception.

However, while the crumb tray for most models are removable, it is not the case here. You need to tilt the oven back, unlock the crumb tray at the bottom, and gently shake the crumbs out of the tray.

If you are used to using front removable crumb trays, you may find this non-removable crumb tray to be slightly more cumbersome.

pros 15 Minutes Timer with Automatic Shutoff

While most 4 slice toaster ovens come equipped with 30 minutes timer, the timer featured in this toaster oven is shorter at just 15 minutes.

Fortunately, you can turn the bottom knob all the way to the left to use the stay-on function. In this mode, you will need to keep track of the cooking time yourself.

Advantages

At this point, it should be very clear that the Proctor Silex 31116Y 4-Slice Toaster Oven is a very basic toaster oven that comes with no extra bells and whistles.

However, it appeals to certain groups of people, and it’s definitely worth considering if you are looking for the advantages below:

pros Decent Quality at Rock Bottom Budget

There is no shortage of cheap toaster ovens, but it’s hard to find a half-decent product at this price range. While the Proctor Silex 4 Slice Toaster Oven is far from perfect, it gets the job done with minimal asking price.

pros Good for Students

It’s a perfect choice for students staying in hostels or dormitories, who just need a basic toaster oven for a couple of years. This model is inexpensive, and most people won’t have difficulty giving it away after graduation.

pros Cover Most Common Baking Needs

The inclusion of a broil rack and a bake pan makes it a versatile little appliance. There won’t be a problem for single portion toasting, baking or broiling.

pros Saves Energy on Large Oven

If you find yourself preheating the stove oven at home to heat up every little food item, a small toaster oven can go a long way for basic heating needs. You still need to preheat the toaster oven for a short while, but the relatively frugal 1050W heating elements saves a lot of electricity compared to large ovens.

 What Could be Better?

Naturally, we can’t be asking for advanced features like digital panel and automatic cooking functions at this price range, but there are definitely things that can be done better for this particular model.

cons Cleaning Crumb Tray is Difficult

While most other toaster ovens we have reviewed feature removable crumb trays that slides out from the front easily, the tray in this model is non-removable and hard to clean.

You have to remove the broil rack and baking pan from the interior, tilt the oven, unlock the bottom tray, and gently shake the crumbs out. It’s cumbersome, but at least the toaster oven is light enough to make the process manageable.

cons Toast Shade Control is Hit-and-Miss

It is not easy to get consistent toast shades from toaster ovens with manual knobs, and the same is true for this model. A slight adjustment on the knob will result in different toast shade, so keep this in consideration if you need perfect toast shades every single time.

Tips: Place your bread in the center of broil rack for more even toasting. Experiment with lighter toast shades first to prevent burning your toasts.

cons Mechanical Timer is Loud

The timer in this toaster oven is controlled by manual knob and mechanical parts, which produces a pretty loud “tick-tock” sound when it’s counting down. It’s not a problem if your kitchen is closed, but it can be distracting if you are in the near vicinity all the time.

The Bottom Line

The adage “what you pay is what you get” applies here. If you decide to purchase the Proctor Silex 4 Slice Toaster Oven, make sure you set your expectations right.

It is a basic toaster oven designed to serve your basic needs – reheating, quick baking and simple broiling. The interior is not very spacious, but it’s more than enough for single portion food items.

The exterior is sturdy with black or white metal housing, but it can get a bit hot when it’s under full load. Make sure you touch only the handle to prevent burning your hands.

The non-removable crumb tray can be cumbersome, but its lightweight make removing crumbs manageable. It’s a decent choice for the cheapest of toaster ovens, but make sure you look at our top budget toaster ovens if you have a bit more to spend.
