Sharp R-930AW Convection Microwave Oven Review

Sharp R-930AW Convection Microwave Oven Review

Sharp doesn’t have a lot of entries in the convection microwave oven category, but the Sharp R-930AW Convection Microwave Oven is one of their more popular models.

In fact, it has been one of the most popular models out of all the choices in the market.

There are good reasons for its popularity. It features 11 different power levels, an advanced interactive cooking system with custom help and programming instructions, and unique sensors to regulate cooking conditions.

You can even use microwave and convection mode in tandem to cook your food much quicker. In theory, it should have been a perfect appliance, but unfortunately we are unable to recommend this model to our readers.

Even though our test unit functioned admirably, we have seen reports of major issues that plagued other consumers, which we will explain in details below.

If you are looking for cheaper and more reliable convection microwave ovens, we suggest you browse the best convection microwave ovens in 2017 instead.

Features of Sharp R-930AW Convection Microwave Oven

Measuring at 24.6″ (L) x 19″ (W) x 14.8″ (H), this convection microwave oven occupies a larger footprint than most other models we have tested.

However, this is mostly due to its larger-than-average interior space of 1.5 cubic feet, as compared to the common 1.2 cubic feet of its competitors.

It is also equipped with advanced Smart and Easy sensor to automatically determine cooking/reheating times, which is absent in most other models in the same category.

Since the functions of this convection microwave oven are pretty extensive, you may want to view the detailed user manual for more information.

prosAutomatic Computing Functions

The Sharp R-930AW comes with 3 automatic functions – CompuBroil, CompuRoast, and CompuBake to automatically compute the time and temperature required for broiling, roasting and baking in the convection mode.

prosSmart and Easy Sensors

These automatic functions are enabled by a set of temperature and humidity sensors that are installed in the interior of the convection microwave oven. These sensors provide feedback to the appliance to regulate power, temperature and cooking time automatically.

It’s safe to say that almost anyone can prepare decent meals with these automatic settings.

pros15.4″ Large Turntable and Racks

A large metal turntable comes with the microwave convection oven, and it can be easily removed from the motor coupler for cleaning. A set of racks with 2 different heights are included for broiling and convection cooking.

prosBright Interior Light and Interactive Display

The interior light of the Sharp R-930AW is located at the right side, and it lights up not only when it is running, but also when it you open the door (which is helpful if your kitchen light does not reach into the oven).

The interactive display above the control panel is bright and easy to read.

Advantages

Naturally, the advantages of the Sharp R-930AW comes in the form of its versatility and user-friendliness. Being a convection microwave oven, this model combines the convenience and speed of a microwave, as well as the functionalities of a regular convection oven.

The 4-way convection system allows hot air to circulate inside the oven when it is cooking in convection mode. This ensures quicker cooking and produces even results, preventing one side from getting burnt while the other side not fully cooked.

prosPowerful Combination Cooking

The Sharp R-930AW makes use of both convection heat and microwave in a single cooking session to maximize its potential.

Lets say you want to defrost a casserole, heat it up in the microwave and then grill it to melt the cheese and brown the top. You can set the microwave convection oven to defrost for 10 minutes, then bake with microwave at 100% power for 5 minutes, followed by grilling for 1 minute.

It produces much better results than just microwaving or grilling it with regular convection oven.

prosSmart Sensors Take the Guesswork Away

One of the unique features that come with this model, the smart sensors automatically detect the humidity and temperature of your food inside the oven. This information is used to regulatesthe power level, temperature and remaining cooking time to produce a consistent result every single time.

We have tested this feature on casseroles of different temperature (frozen, fresh from the fridge, and room temperature). The results come out the same in all 3 scenarios, just the way we like it.

Keep in mind that the sensors are only activated if you select “Compu” functions. Otherwise, the oven will cook your food according to the time you have indicated on the manual timer.

What Could be Better?

Even though the Sharp R-930AW is a powerful and versatile machine, the Achilles heel of the model comes in the form of questionable reliability and longevity.

A large number of users reported having problems with their machines within a relatively short period of time, which means it has a higher-than-usual malfunction rate.

consQuestionable Reliability

While our test unit worked great, there are quite a few customers who were not as lucky.

Some customers reported uneven heating of food and water, with the top half extremely hot while the bottom half remains cold. Some other users experience abnormally long cooking time after using it for a short period of time.

consIrreparable If Magnetron Diode Expires

While Sharp gives a 5 year part warranty for the magnetron diode component inside the oven (the vacuum tube that generates microwave), users have reported that the part has been unavailable since January 2014.

One user had a faulty magnetron tube and brought it to Sears to be repaired, only to be told that the part is no longer available. While you can still find magnetron tubes for some other Sharp models, they don’t seem to fit R-930AW, effectively making it irreparable.

We’ve made a search for the part number of magnetron diode for this model in partstore.com, and indeed it is currently out of order.

consPremium Price Tag

Admittedly, the Sharp R-930AW is one of the more expensive convection microwave ovens available in the market right now. While it comes with useful features (especially the auto sensors), the longevity issues that plague this model make it a less attractive option.

If you are looking for a much cheaper convection microwave oven with excellent reliability, check out the Cuisinart CMW-200. It provides one of the best price-to-performance ratio out of the 10 models we have tested for this category.

The Bottom Line

Even though the Sharp R-930AW Convection Microwave Oven offers plenty of features and versatility, it has been plagued by relatively major issues in terms of reliability and repairability.

We expect a product of this price range to last at least 5 years, but it seems that a lot of users are not getting the longevity they have hoped for. For the price you have to pay for this unit, you have much better options such as the Cuisinart CMV-200 which doesn’t break the bank.
